THIS AUCTION: A VERY SWEET SOUNDING GIBSON LG-1 converted to an LG-2 BY MASTER LUTHIER DAVID SHEPPARD in Summerville, SC.

----------------------------------------------
THIS GUITAR HAD LOOSE AND MISSING BRACES WHEN I PURCHASED IT AS AN LG-1 LAST YEAR.  WHEN I TOOK IT DAVID TO GET REPAIRED, THE COST TO REPAIR WAS FAIRLY HIGH but to CONVERT TO AN X-BRACED LG-2 GUITAR WAS < $100 PREMIUM.

This 55 year old vintage guitar had several nice features:
  • original finish
  • original pickguard
  • original Brazilian bridge and fretboard
  • a very nice back
  • top showed wear but was not abused - it had been well played - a positive sign for a vintage guitar
  • great early fifties neck with 1 11/16" width at the nut, a "C" profile and NO cracks
  • MINIMAL & MODEST CRACKS:  2 tightly repaired on the back approx 2 inches long.  The top: 1 in upper bout treble side about 2 inches long and 1 bottom center about 2 inches long. Note the lower bout bass side marks are scratches, not cracks.
  • The finish is checked less than what I usually see on a guitar this old with the crack free sides showing more than either the top or back. The back on this guitar is very pretty.
so goodbye ladder and hello 'x'

David took the back off, made two new back braces and completely removed and rebuilt the top braces in a scalloped X-brace pattern using Adirondack spruce (after carefully removing the original bridge - he added a new small maple bridge plate - which replaced the original long spruce plate used on LG-1's)

THE other GOOD:
NICE C-SHAPED NECK; NECK angle and action are perfect following David's extensive work.  The back of the neck is marked where a strap was tied around the guitar long ago and left on too long - so it marred the finish - don't know if it shows in the photos, but it is a minor visual imperfection.

This guitar PLAYS FABULOUS!!

IT SOUNDS RICH AND BALANCED - NOT AS LOUD AS A JUMBO MODEL BUT VERY SPECIAL

COOL ORIGINAL PICKGUARD

The tuners are older OPEN BACKED REPLACEMENTS.  They work fine (probably a Japanese version of open backed Kluson style tuners)

A VINTAGE FUNCTIONAL, SOFT CASE WITH YELLOW PLUSH LINING IS INCLUDED.  THE GUITAR WILL BE SAFELY BUBBLE WRAPPED AND READY FOR PROMPT SHIPMENT TO THE WINNER.

MARKET ON NICE LG-1 GUITARS FROM EARLY 1950's IS $1,500 to $1,700.   FOR LG-2's, THE MARKET IS $2,700
SO HERE IS A FABULOUS X-BRACED PLAYER FOR ABOUT THE PRICE OF A LADDER BRACED MODEL.  PLEASE NOTE THE EXTERIORS OF THE LG-1 AND LG-2 MODELS WERE VIRTUALLY THE SAME (SLIGHT VARIATION IN SIZE OF SUNBURST MAINLY)

IT's ONLY A PLAYER BASED ON THE HISTORY AND WORK - BUT AN OUTSTANDING CHOICE FOR YOUR NEXT X-BRACED PARLOR GUITAR.  PLAYS AND PROJECTS VERY WELL - GREAT FOR FINGERPICKING AND BLUES PLAYING

HERE IS YOUR CHANCE TO OWN A COOL 55 YEAR OLD SWEET SOUNDING AND PLAYING GIBSON MADE IN THE KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN FACTORY .

FRETS HAVE MINIMAL TO NO WEAR - DAVID REPLACED THE WORN ONES AND CLEANED UP THE OTHERS AS WELL AS THE BRAZILIAN FRET BOARD.   THE TOP BINDING HAS BEEN REGLUED A LITTLE SLOPPY NEAR WHERE THE TOP MEETS THE BOTTOM.  (THIS WORK WAS PRE-DAVID GETTING IT) - A MINOR COSMETIC FLAW WE JUST LEFT ALONE.

THE NECK IS STRAIGHT AND AS STATED EARLIER, THE GUITAR IS SET UP NEAR PERFECT (PERFECT PROBABLY DOES NOT EXIST ON AN OLD GUITAR - BUT THIS IS CLOSE!)
